About Deborah Broad 

Deborah Broad's mastery of pastels allows her to take many exhilarating liberties with a medium that has a long history behind it. Surveying her work, one is reminded of paths forged at the end of the last century by Cezanne and Degas. Although she respects that tradition by working in still life and landscape, viewers notice immediately that in addition to the honest renderings of what is before her, Broad is most engaged with setting up and capturing distinctive rhythms that would escape the attention of a less accomplished artist. Broad is also practiced in oil, and moves between these two mediums with skill and imagination.

Deborah Broad is a choreographer of visual elements who often relies on spontaneity and impulse in the orchestration of her characters. An overturned basket provides the occasion for depicting, with controlled haphazardness, a variety of fruits and vegetables. The high-contrast color arrangements of small round fruits, or conversant portly jugs, positioned as if interacting, reveal the artist's unquestionable command of color and composition. Also, she is the possessor of a self-mocking sense of humor and sometimes that humor can be found in her titles. While she seems supremely confident of her still life arrangements, her awe and respect of the landscape is apparent in her grandiose and romanticized treatment of the subject. The word "magic" is frequently invoked, and the scenes are rendered with an impressive sharpness and clarity.

Deborah Broad was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She studied fine art at the New York Phoenix School of Design and the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia. She is represented in corporate and private collections worldwide including Reish and Luftman, Washington, DC, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, and National Health Lawyers Association, Washington, DC. Broad was the recipient of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Award from the Pastel Society of America and her contributions have been recognized by The Artist Magazine.
